I remember my ceramics teacher telling us, from the very first lesson, that our pieces are entities; that they all have a soul - but at the time, we did not quite understand him.

 

  
     
 
A number of years of learning had to pass so I could eventually see it, and even more to feel it. I finally undrstood that those objects, figures and wall compositions not only are alive and friendly entities, but have their own personality, become melancholy and gay, play with light and shadows, live among us and keep us company.
       
   
They ask for their own space in ours, and need to be surrounded by humble material, as in iron, wood and whatever else is available. They avoid being an addition to something, or pretend to be an impersonal decoration. That is why they emerge from a piece of clay - are formed and carved and fired in the kiln. They come to life bringing us together and spreading their warmth.
