The
new Athens Metro is currently under construction. The project
has been undertaken by Attiko Metro. The new lines and stations
can be seen in the following map:
Metro Highlights
The two new lines (Line 2 and Line 3) carry an estimated 140 million
passengers a year or 450.000 daily. The previously existing
Athens-Pireas Electric Railway (Line 1) line carried approximately
110 million passengers annually or 350,000 per day.
The time interval between trains is 3 minutes during rush hours
and 5 to 10 minutes in non-rush hours. A typical train during
rush hours will carry 1000 passengers.
69.000 square metres of archaeological investigations represent
the largest single effort ever undertaken within Athens.
